   The DYST is funded by donations from individuals, companies, and
organizations in the local area and through NRA Foundation Grants.  
The officers and coaches of the DYST are unpaid volunteers and are
certified Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Certified Hunter
Education Instructors.
   The teams or individuals who distinguish themselves in the LA. YHEC
will qualify and participate in the International YHEC.
          The DYST team is open to youths ages ten to eighteen who
have successfully completed the selection process to participate on the
team.  Try-outs are held usually in late January.  The DYST is a
National Rifle Association (NRA) affiliated club and membership in the
NRA is encouraged.  The NRA is the organization which annually
conducts the International YHEC and club liability insurance rates are
less expensive.
   The DYST trains young people in sportsmanship and proficiency in
outdoor skills, sponsoring teams and individuals in the Louisiana Youth
Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC), where achievement levels are
earned and awards given for individual and team accomplishments in
eight events.  Where possible the field events are designed to simulate
actual conditions or situations encountered while hunting.  The eight
events are:
The DeSoto Youth Sportsmen Team ( DYST) was formed by a group of
local sportsmen who are certified Hunter Education Instructors to be a
vehicle for advanced hunter education activities in the local area.
